This educational tool provides a structured approach to teaching children about colors, shapes, and common objects through an engaging interactive format.

Research indicates that children initially learn to recognize "typical" or "more common" examples within a category—such as a red apple—before understanding less typical variants, like a yellow apple. This progression is supported by the design of the program.

The "Learn with Rufus: Groups and Categories" program aims to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge about various groups and categories, including colors, shapes, and fruits. By exposing children to both typical and atypical examples, it fosters broader category formation and enhances the ability to generalize concepts. The platform is highly adaptable, accommodating children with diverse skill levels, abilities, and learning preferences.

Developed by Dr. Holly Gastgeb, a clinical and developmental psychologist with over ten years of experience working with neurotypical children and those on the autism spectrum, the program is grounded in research highlighting early difficulties in categorization observed in children with ASD. Since category development advances throughout childhood, the game can also serve children who are advanced learners without any diagnosed learning challenges.

The structure of the program consists of three segments: a learning phase and two distinct games:
<ul>
<li>Learning – Presents an overview of the category before gameplay begins.</li>
<li>Find It! – Displays multiple category members; the child is prompted to select a specific item.</li>
<li>Name It! – Shows a single category member; the child is encouraged to identify or name it.</li>
</ul>

To sustain motivation and engagement, several features are incorporated:
<ul>
<li>Reward sets – Options include nine colorful themes such as bugs, cars, cats, dinosaurs, among others.</li>
<li>Toy break – Periodic breaks are facilitated via an on-screen spinning top that responds to touch and tilt. This feature can be disabled based on individual needs.</li>
<li>Positive reinforcement – Correct answers trigger a celebratory "happy dance" and verbal praise; incorrect responses prompt clarification of the correct answer.</li>
<li>Music and sounds – Child-friendly audio elements are included but can be disabled if sensory sensitivities are present.</li>
<li>Text display – When enabled, words appear above images to support reading development; this can be turned off to reduce distraction.</li>
</ul>

Additional customization options include:
<ul>
<li>Category sets – Initial sets include colors and shapes; future sets are regularly released for free or purchase.</li>
<li>Difficulty levels – Adjustable to match child ability:
<ul>
<li>Easy: All typical category examples</li>
<li>Medium: Mix of typical and less typical examples</li>
<li>Hard: Only less typical examples</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Training mode – Practice sessions prior to gameplay can be disabled for increased challenge.</li>
<li>Group size – Select 2 or 4 items per game depending on experience level.</li>
<li>Language options – Available in English and Spanish.</li>
</ul>

For professionals supporting children's development:
<ul>
<li>Profiles per child – Multiple participants can use the program with data stored individually.</li>
<li>Performance tracking – Summarized data visualizations are provided at the end of each session; these can be enlarged or examined in detail by interacting with the interface.</li>
